Progressive Urbanism in Small Towns: The Contingencies of Governing From the Left

The progressive potential of urban politics is the subject growing interest. However, debates have been largely focused on large cities with strong constituencies activists and Left-voting residents. We know little about opportunities challenges for in smaller areas. This article addresses these shortcomings through a discussion “progressive urbanism” relation to small towns. In doing so, it makes three main contributions. First, provides definition urbanism as political projects social justice, citizenship democracy exploring contingent “localism,” “urban movements” “municipal government.” Second, empirical insights towns German state Brandenburg governed by mayors Left Party. Third, outlines towns, providing points reflection future research.
